I've noticed that not that many people setup 301 redirects on their websites. I have also noticed that those who do setup a 301 redirect choose to redirect traffic to the www version of the domain name. Why would someone choice to have links pointing the www.example.com version of their domain rather than having links to example.com? I think its much easier to type without the www. Obviously, this is strickly a preference based question, since in terms of SEO it doesn't matter which you choose as long as you atleast have a 301 redirect setup (and because once you choose a format its best to stick with it).

I direct it to the www. but now that you ask the question, I can't really describe why I did that. It just makes sense (at least to me).

I believe having the WWW. gives higher search engine results and SEO period, but that is what I was told.

if you type in google.com,what do you get?
yup you guessed it,http://www.google.com ![]() www (would wide web) stood for being a website. now days,it doesn't mean much, but the standard is still the same. www is really like a subdomain.in the www folder is a copy of your site. that's why a 301 is important. it doesn't matter seo wise if you have the www's or not. it does natter if you have backlinks with and without the www's. again, thats why a 301 is important. ![]()

It basically goes down to preference I use both for different websites depending. Some people say that sitename.com looks better in the search engine listings than www.sitename.com but www. is soo common it won't make a lot of difference either way.
