Hey all,
I have just started a free registration process for users on my site. The idea is to start building my direct traffic up. Currently the benefit for registering is that registered users play all games hosted on my site so they aren't sent anywhere. I have a pic of garfield on the right hand side of my site that promotes my registration process. What I want to know from you guys is 2 things: 1) If you were a user, what benefits would attract you enough so that you would sign up? 2) If you were a user, what visual elements would draw you to even think about registering? Look forward to your vast wisdom ![]() Cheers, Chris http://www.stumpygames.com |

I saw that the other day and I thought, good thinking. In this day of the traffic trade making users more comfortable with the fact that it will only be your site might drive up page views and ad money for your base group of users.
I only register at places that I can actually contribute something. So for me it would be high scores on unique games, ability to comment on a popular site, make a profile on a popular site, etc... For me personally I wont sign up on a small site to post high scores on a game that's in 50000 arcades. But hey thats just me. |

I asked the users at WebGamesNetwork this a few days ago, and they all said because of the high score games (bragging rights agains their pals
) and the fact I had competitions sometimes. There is only 300 users, but it is OK for the small traffic it gets. |

i think features like knogregate would be cool (levels, achievements and badges) but it is nearly impossible to make it work... (only if you have $$) probably charge you $xx,xxx for a script like kong

Now a SCFI idea:
- organize some game tournaments, and give off some prizes to first second and third place.... it does not have to be something that needs shipping... but maybe access to some special games, or site content... - or maybe give some nice prizes, (cant think of any) and advertise that process on the site... just a quick tought.... (whish there is such script...)

high score competitions is the only reason I can think to join up. I've got over 5k signups over the last 2 years on 2 sites combined because of leaderboards.
The only other reason I can think for people to join is if your site is producing a decent amount of unique games where users would actually want to join and comment etc. Like Newgrounds, Kongregate, etc. Or if you were to try to become a profile/myspace service but that market seems to be cornered already. |

I agree with everything you guys have said and for me the big point is no one wants to register so there has to be something in it for that person. We just finally got our members section back online and I cleaned out bogus accounts but we are still at about 894 guys so we will be working members again now as well as trading traffic. Traffic trading is tha BOMB but I always like to diversify my marketing strategies. Stumpy you and booty and yeah xweaselx have really mastered the art of traffic trading. I got more of a history of old school list & community building so I hope supplement my trades with more stuff like the guys are mentioning here. I was set back like 3 months but our script and features are getting back together again with some twist that I could not have done before.
Part of building any registered member list will be trial and error just like anything online but the tried and true stuff these guys have mentioned is great and exactly how we were growing our member ranks. Before the little DRAMA it was really starting to pick up. Now I got lots of work to do but man the is just how it is in arcades I guess LOL always something to do!
