Hi,
I'm considering which games portal script to get right now. I was thinking about GSS, but it seems that the main guy who was running it (Chad) has left, and I'm wondering if things will just fall away. So my question is, which of all the top scripts has good backing and will continue to have good support and upgrades? thanks again for any advice! vizplay. |

PHPAS is a very good one with robust support and community. Our own RickyG has MAGS, which is a decent script, and both he and I support it. If you need support, stay away from GS as they are notorious for lack of support. GMOA is starting to develop a decent track record of support as well. I think that one will work out to, but it's kind of early to tell what it will be like long term.

Thanks for all the replies.
What does everyone here use? Looking at the amount of forum activity here GSS looks like the most popular, but as was said, what with Chad gone (who seemed to be really helpful when it came to tech stuff), will the same level of technical support be there. Having said that I asked 2 questions in their forum recently and got quick answers back. OnArcade looks good, but I can't see any clear way of adding Google adsense to it. It has some predefined zones, but beyond that I'm not sure. I had a look at PHPAS, but the demo sites don't look that great to me, also again I wasn't sure how to put in Adsense (add adzone??) (saw a link to a forum posting about it, but I think you have to buy the script to be able to access the info). They also only have 150 games, it is cheap though. I think for me, I want a script which had lots of features, is easily changable (so I can put ads wherever I need, and make a great looking site), comes with a good amount of games (at least 200), I can remove the copyright from and is no more then $100 in cost. |

I use PHPAS on 1 site, ASCMS on 2, GHS(now MAGS) on 3, and both GS v1 as well as my own newly hand coded on a new demo/project site.
PHPAS is a decent buy. If you're willing to spend $100, then you can get the script, buy a game pack, and get another template for it. MAGS comes with 1300 games already, is fairly easy to change the template. And like I said, RickyG and I both know/support it. PHPAS has a more features built in, such as membership, but it also uses more hosting resources because of it. Removing the copyright from either is something you need to take up with their respective owners. I know most script sellers charge extra for that, I'm not sure what the policy is for either of them.

Hi,
Your comments raise a number of questions for me. First of which is GSS and GS are different scripts right? The one I was thinking of getting was GameSiteScript, as GameScript seems fairly expensive. You mention MAG's, which doesn't have membership? Thats an interesting issue all in itself, how much does having "membership" and a "community" add to the website? does it make that much of a difference? from my own experience I would say yes (community equals good thing), but thats on non-gaming websites. I would love to see details of extra gamepacks for PHPAS, and see other good templates, but these are all only available to view if you already own PHPAS. I've spent the last 3 hours looking over the details of OnArcade, GSS and PHPAS, and GSS still seems to come out on top. The basic template looks great, its meant to be easily modified, and the basic cost isn't too much ($75), although removing the copyright does as an extra $95 (more then the script!). Of all the scripts you have used, which one was the easiest to add adds to? or are they pretty much the same if you have knowledge of PHP/Html? |

..2 other issues just popped into my head (sorry for all of this, but I'm just starting all of this!)
..are any games in these gamepacks multiplayer games? or is this something which requires a whole different level of backend development? and, how easy/difficult would it be to integrate a revenue sharing scheme into any of these scripts? |

It's ok, none of us knows it all. That's why we band together hoping to learn from each other.
Yes, GSS and GS are two totally separate scripts.GS was basicaly the first and leader for a while until some others like GSS came about. GS is still one of, if not the, best scripts on the market. Membership is an issue that is debated. Some say it is needed, some say it takes up too much system resources to run it. It is for you to decide which way you want to go. Any feature that runs from an SQL database takes up more system resources, and if you use too many resources you will get your hosting account killed on a shared hosting plan. There are some ways to ease the use such as caching, but membership is one area it is hard to tweak it so that it uses much less in system resources. If you have membership that counts games played by a member, it runs an extra SQL query every time that member play or reloads a game in order to add to the game count in his profile. If you have few visitors online at the same time, it doesn't matter, if you have 200 at the same time, it does. If you have a dedicated server, you don't need to worry as much, though it can still bring a server to it's knees, but that costs more money. Most scripts now days are easy to add advertising code to. I think that PHPAS has it in the admin panel. GSS and Onarcade I'm not as familiar with. But pretty much any script is fairly easy once you get to know it, and have some PHP/HTML under your belt. If you have other revenue plans than just plain advertising, then I'd have to say it would depend on the plan. As far as I know, none of them have multiplayer games. Any multiplayer games out there usually are tailored to the specific site they are on, with extra services loaded on the server. As far as I know that is. As far as GSS is concerned, I would not want anybody to think I'm steering anybody away from it, nor talking it down. It's a very good script. It has it's problems, but it's very good. From the way you asked, it seemed apparent that you wanted a script with a proven track record of support. this will make the second time GSS has changed hands, as far as we can tell, and nobody knows what the level of support will be like 3 months from now with the current owner.

Almost forgot. PHPAS did at one time offer the ability to turn off membership. It's something that you could start off with it in the off mode, then when it gets going and it's paying for itself, turn it on. Visitors tend to see this as a website adding new things, and tend to like that. I'm not sure which others offer this or don't.
