I have been doing programming for over 7 years. I have told others that hotlinking on swf, dcr and some other media files will not work with IE. There are many scripts on the web saying that you can use .htaccess to stop hotlinking of swf files but they are clearly wrong and misleading. Someone said their's were working and I test their site and it was clearly not working. I told them to test it and then they removed their hotlinking. I know .htaccess is apache. The thing with IE is it's outdated unless as what they have done is fixed the bug in their new version of IE if they have done one yet. The reasons why it doesn't or didn't work with IE is because IE never would get the referrer of the file so the .htaccess would not know what to block and what not to block if there is no referrer information. The reasons I use php is because I had tried so many ways of trying to make it work with both Firefox and IE, but it didn't work no matter what and php was the only solution to this problem. Don't get me wrong as hot linking on images work just fine with IE, it's the media files like swf and dcr which will not work. The worst thing about it is that so many people use Firefox as their main browser and then use that hotlink code that many tutorial sites give and it works in IE, but they don't realize that most acrade users use IE and they are loosing a bulk of their traffic from it as none of the games would work in IE. The reasons for this is because you are blocking everything apart from the site that the game is on. But if IE doesn't give the referer information when the dcr or swf file is called/used then it will block that file no matter if it's on your website. I don't use IE anymore so I don't know if they have realised a new IE version recently, but if they have it may have now been fixed, but in version 7.1 it didn't work and also in any other versions below that I believe it didn't work.
