Default GZip Compression

GZip Compression

Hey, I'm looking at compression for my website.

I've found these which might be helpful:
http://betterexplained.com/articles/...p-compression/

or

http://perishablepress.com/press/200...p-compression/
http://perishablepress.com/press/200...t-compression/
http://perishablepress.com/press/200...s-compression/

Will those work adding to my htaccess ruleset? Which is better?
Should I use all three (php, js, css)?

I'm using PHPas and on HostGator, I was wondering if those support GZip, also will all web-browsers be okay with the compression. I have rewrite rules for SEO. Do I have to setup the server to work or enable it?

I don't think Hostgator supports/allows this gzip compression on their shared hosting?

I often think that mysite support GZip compress, but today when I check that, find NO.
So bad, I just add GZip compression to my site. Faster.

Add the following to your php pages to Gzip them

Quote:
<?php if (substr_count($_SERVER['HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING'], 'gzip')) ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); else ob_start(); ?>

Thanks,

While Gzip isn't supported using 'mod-gzip' or 'mod-deflate' on the shared host...

This works '<? ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); ?>' at the top of my index.php and compresses 80% of the PHP files. While it loads faster overall it delays the startup and I think Google's crawl thinks the site is 3x slower? I have removed it for now, as I'm unsure if it's a help or just causing more issues with my website using that compression.

I have not faced such situation. Maybe there is something else causing it. check your speed before compressions and after compression at pagetest.org

Do you have to flush the PHP results and end it or will it do that by itself?

Benching the results it does go a bit faster with compression, but it delays a bit with a blank screen when first visiting the domain on dialup. I think it's stitching it together in the backend and has nothing to show the user before it's all done and compressed. Short but noticable differences.

It would be great to use, if I could reduce the delay and be 100% sure that all browsers and crawlers will support it?

If your host doesn't support gzip compression, you can use sumeetrajaggarwal said. In fact I am using it to gzip my css (about 60% compression rate), and it does the work.

Cheers.

Yes, it was a nice feature and seems to work in compressing 80% and reducing overall time when benchmarked. But I'm scared to use it, probably because of the host I'm using.

My host says it doesn't support GZip for it's shared hosting.

I was either doing something wrong, the host doesn't actually like that option either, or google wasn't crawling it correctly.

Using '<? ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); ?>' at the top of my index.php, resulted in...

Compressed 80% all PHP.
Delay start of 1-5 seconds with a blank screen when first visiting the site.
Overall faster download time, minus the delay it's however nothing.
CPU use 0.3% to 0.5%, woah!
Google removing my homepage for SERPs, other pages still there but seemed to be removing them too slowly.
Google saying the website is 3x times slower under site performance.
Google thinking it's a directory rather than a website.

I removed it and left it for a few days, homepage back on page 2 for it's keywords, moving back up again. Pages are indexing again.

The speed performance in Google Webmasters tool is not accurate as it is still in LAB. Try testing it on pagetest.org

You can also use flush to display some part of page if you are seeing delays.
