Picking a good Domain Name

What is some good advice to when it comes to picking a domain name?
A lot seem to already be taken.

I have been making a list of possible domain names I like, but I don't want to give them out and might get stolen out from under me, lol if they are any good, they took a while to come up with.

Is it a bad idea to have your name in it? Aaron, might be hard to spell for some? I don't see too many professional sites with the actual owners name?

If the .com domain name is available, really good and simple, but the .net is already taken by a smallish site, would it be bad taking it? The best one is currently parked for a few thousand.

I guess I perfer .com over the others, is this the best to go for?

A .com domain is definately the best way to go. In regards to the domain name itself, some will tell you that a domain name rich in keywords is the way to go while others will lean towards a shorter but memorable domain name as their preferred choice.

get .com for sure and get one that you can make brandable in case you ever need to sell and also to help make it memorable so people come back. I would suggest not using your name.

I would recommend deciding on a theme for your arcade and a specific niche. Then pick a name that is memorable and catchy. Doesnt have to be a .com but .com is definitely best. Dont use your name, Im sure you can think of something better. A keyword in your domain is best, but not necessary. Dont go more than 3 words or 12 characters. Goodluck!

Lots of great advice here and TBH I hated that video because this is about 80% of exactly how I pick domains for the last year and a half LOL. OK some people are going to say that you don't have to have the KW in your domain and there are points on both sides but the KW does not hurt and if you can find something where the moon and stars line up right then you can get a domain with low competition and a good ECPM and hit the first page running.

OK now having done this for a while I will try and add some honest advice on top of that EXCELLENT ( was joking about hating it ofcourse ) video that might help or confuse you LOL. When you weight traffic Vs ECPM put more weight on the ECPM because the traffic numbers are not as accurate and until you are in the top 3 on the FIRST PAGE those numbers for traffic will not be as accurate. That was the bad news but there is good news.

The numbers for ECPM are not as accurate either and many times if you optimize a page for clicks you can do 30 - 80% + better than those ECPM numbers.

Last point to add to this is also run a little check by taking your favorites and going back to Google and placing them in quotes then look at the number of search results you are competing with. All this will do is let you know a very rough idea of how hard you will fight initially to hopefully start out on the first page for the KW in the domain. That is basic but a very good and simple way to get started.

OK now for one other thing

Sometimes a nice short domain is easy to type & remember. We have a domain called Gubug.com and all I was looking for originally was a mid sized domain. Let me point these Generic standards out ( I HATE using generic standards like this ) they are not gospel just something to consider because they are widely held.

3,4 letter also called LLL or LLLL domains are short
FUPA.com
My domain
GUBUG.com is mid sized ( not short )
and EVERYTHING ELSE in the mind of a paint by numbers domain investor is long.
In the mind of a domain investor dashes and numbers on a dot com are not so good.

We get about 25% of our traffic on Gubug as direct traffic and while we have thousands of members I think a great deal of it has to do with the fact that we have a mid sized .com domain. I hope this can help anyone interested out in the decision making process even more.

Few more things.

First place in my contry for keyword games ("igrice" on serbian) are one blogger (?) blog for results on google.com and other on localized search is site with number + keyword "igrice" in his .com domain.

Conclusion - refresh your content , its not necessary to change links with a hudred of sites.

One more thing.

If you are optimizing your site for "best car games" and there are much more sites which are in your niche (they also want to have good rank for "best car games" ) then put in your Title just these three keywords not something like this "best car games - auto, moto, bmw, bla bla".

Try to place your titles like this :
"title of the game" - "title of my site"
