RickyG is completely correct. It's all about promotion and getting your site out there. You can have the greatest site in the world, but if nobody knows about it, then no one is going to go to it.

Interesting topic since it's purely opinion based.

A couple people saying 'some of these sites are just for profit' as if that's a bad thing

I like sites that don't have a bunch of animated seizure inducing gif's personally. I think they hurt sites as much as they help. Quality content and nice layouts are important for getting good stats out of your traffic, but nothing is as important as being able to drive traffic to your site. Eyeballs pay the bills.

This is where we go our separate ways as there are many different ways to drive traffic, some better than others. Focus on traffic and revenue will follow. If you're focused on money, it will be a lot harder to build traffic.
