Server load...

Right... so i found out the otherday that the new version of gamesitescript didnt cause such a high CPU load because you could enable the cache system and this stops there being any need for sqls querys on each page load... which lags the server down.

Ok great yea, i have changed one of my sites to GSS 3.1 Dress up games for girls / GirlDressUpGames.net

But what im confused about is.... the server is alot quicker and doesnt seem to have any trouble running the site as it did before... it used to run slowly somtimes even crashing the whole server somtimes.

But if i type in the "top" command into SSH it shows this :

Mem: 3083432k total, 2935480k used, 147952k free, 159332k buffers
Swap: 2096472k total, 0k used, 2096472k free, 2412112k cached

I dont understand it says the memory is almost all used up doesnt it? :S
I dont fully understand Swap... because there is shows almost 2GB is free....

luke,

Your memory stats from top look great.

As far as real memory ("Mem") you have many free Megs. Plenty of room for more.

And as far as virtual memory ("Swap") you system hasn't needed 1 byte of it, so that couldn't be any better.

So do you think my server would be capable running with 1GB RAM instead of 3GB as it is at the moment?

Thinking of downgrading....

Hmmm, well it will probably "run", but *if* you don't have enough RAM, it's going to quickly move into using swap which will cause the disks to be used for virtual memory, which will slow down your machine and increase pageload times.

I've never downgraded memory, so I don't have any experience with that. I do know that increasing memory from 2G to 4G can really make a machine that is overloaded much happier.
