You will always have search engine bots visiting your site, or at least you hope so.

For example on Talk Arcades today are hundreds of bots:

Quote:
Baiduspider (4) , Yahoo! Slurp (233) , Google (1) , MSNBot (5) , Technorati (3) , Teoma/Ask Jeeves (1) , Gigabot (1) , NaverBot (1)
If you don't want these bots showing up in your online stats, you could tweak the software to ignore common USER AGENTS like "googlebot" and "slurp", etc. If you block the main search bots you will get a more realistic picture of human visitors on your site.

Well, if you just want to find out, you can take a peek at your server logs. You can see who came and when. Of course this can be a lot of information to sort thru, but if you have access to your logs it should all be in there.

Another option is to look at your webstats, which might show you something about bots that are visiting.

But if you want the software to only show humans, it will surely require a modification of the software to change that behavior.

Most bots are not evil however there are plenty of evil bots that will bring down your server, scrape email addys, try to find vulnerabilities on your server, spam your forums/comments, etc.

Hi

For me I use a script on my website that shows recent games played. The script also gives me a birds eye view of what games are most popular. I look for human characteristics ie some pattern or similarity like boxing games or bike racing games are very popular. This generally lets me know that my site is being visited by humans possibly. Also my what others are playing constantly serves up good Ideas for others and makes the site a bit more sticky. I am assuming that what you meant by your question is. How do you know if you have paid for traffic if it is legit or just some bots.

Another thing I do ( less effective ) is to look at my alexa rankings and especially looking at the weekly rankings and a breakdown of how many visits are coming from english speaking countires ( UK,USA and Canada ). This is another good way to check your traffic out and also I noticed that you don't like to check out a lot of code so this might be helpful. BTW in order to make the server data on Alexa a bit more effective you can add in a alexa widget. Also inspite of what Alexa says I think the widget helps your rankings. You might also add a toolbar from alexa to your browser and visit your site regular. Does this help your ranking? Maybe I can not say but it gets you more attention and more current data for you to discern your traffic.

As far as arcades I am Noob also and I HATE digging in code ( My brother who runs our sites with me does most of that ). I do marketing and we work on designs and promotion Idease but I think using Alexa and something that will give you current visitor habits will help you Identify human traffic. Also some of those tips might help you get some tAlexa juice if there is such a thing and if you should even care about it LOL.

Warmest Regards:
Alfred
