phpBB Arcade Mod

As everyone knows, phpBB is a popular forum software package that is also free. There are hundreds of mods for the phpBB platform, and that includes the Arcade Mod which is actively supported by it's author, dEfEndEr, at his site phpbb-arcade.com.

This is an option that should be considered by those on a very tight development budget as it's completely free. Just grab the phpBB source code from phpBB.com and then install the Arcade Mod and you've got a free arcade/forum combo.

One of the most exciting things about the Arcade Mod is it's support for highscores, but the downside is that you can only get highscores from games that have been modified to support highscores. The good news though is that there are thousands of games already ready with the needed adjustments. In fact, the Arcade Mod is compatible with IBP type games, like those available at Gaming Heaven Arcade.

The mod includes support for the following features:

Create unlimited game Categories
Custom game instructions
Tracks All-Time highscores for each game
Also tracks Monthly highscores (manual reset needed)
Tracks an All-Time winner (member with most 1st places)
Tracks a Winner of Month (most 1st places this month)
Saves historical monthly 1st places (so you can see who was winner 3 months ago, etc.)
Tracks number of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place wins for each member in profile
Provides game Ratings, Reviews and Favorites for members
Arcade moderators with special powers

The is also a Tournament feature that is current being developed, but I don't think it's available yet.

A popular example of the Arcade Mod in action is Arcade Boss, although that site has been highly modified with regard to creating a special homepage layout that you don't get with the basic hack...

ArcadeJunky, what portal are you using at ArcadeBoss? Can most of those blocks be found available at phpbb sites?

You might look into the Smartor Portal, it provides a nice homepage option for a phpBB site and comes with some of those blocks. I think the arcade related blocks were adapted from either the phpBB Arcade Mod itself or available hacks for the Arcade Mod.

How do I install it,I am the admin of a phpbb forum I am not sure how to install it ,do I need any program to install it,if so what is it called?Can someone please help me,Thanks I would really appreciate it

you need to read the 'read me'

it takes some file edits.if your not comfortable doing that,you can hire someone to install it.

And always remember to keep a backup your files before you edit them.

(and backup your database)
It's not too hard to install but if it's your first MOD installation it can be kinda confusing. But if you keep backups it's not hard to reupload and try again...
I like that arcade script. dEfEndEr has really done a lot of work getting the new type of invision games to work with phpbb plus many other additions.

I tried reading the read me but didnt really understand it, if I hire someone to do it for me who can I hire I dont really know people who do this.Do you know who I can hire or can you do it?Am I going to have to give them my password and everything or what, and is it free or do I have to pay them,how much would it cost?Thanks

Send me a link to the mod and the site you wish it installed on so I will take a look at it. I have installed PHPBB2 mods before, and I do work on arcades as well. I do charge for this kind of thing, but I would not be able to tell you what until after looking it over. I just got handed a project in meatspace so I can't promise how fast I would get it done, but I would do my best to get it done ASAP. I don't even promise it can be done on your install, or that it will work. Some mods to PHPBB2 don't work on every version, and some don't work right on some that have had security bug fixes. Again, I would need to look it over first. Also keep in mind that if you install the next bug fix PHPBB2 comes out with, it might again cause the arcade mod not to function again. That's the nature of the beast with PHPBB2.

The most secure way to handle it is to ask in here who can be trusted of course, then change your cPanel and PHPBB2 admin panel passwords before you give it to them and then again after they are done. That way you get somebody whos reliable and they don't get to keep your passwords. Make sure you make a backup of your files and MySQL database before hand.

You don't need any programs, except some kind of file editor to make the edits to your phpBB source code and templates, as well as perhaps FTP to upload your changes.

The steps are fairly simple, you just have to follow the instructions in the hack.
