Default Tos

I hope everyone is being extra careful not breaking any TOS terms with ypn and google..

My question is do you have to have a "|" (some sort of border) between your image and google ad, or can they be side by side like I see in so many arcades..?

Any help on this would be great.

That's a great question.

First of all, blending ads (link color, background color, etc.) with your site is perfectly okay with Google, it's something they even recommend...

Quote:
Let's briefly define the three techniques you can use to design color palettes that will be successful for your site:
  • To blend, make the background and borders of your ads the same color as the background of your page where the ad is placed. If your site has a white background and you don't want to spend a lot of time choosing ad colors, we recommend using our pre-designed Open Air palette.
  • To complement, use colors that already exist on your site, but don't match the background and borders exactly where the ads are placed.
  • To contrast, choose colors that stand out against the background of your site. Contrasting is recommended only for sites with dark background, so we suggest using a palette with white background, white borders, and blue titles.

But, the real question is about the images next to ads. And here is the answer from Google...

Quote:
Publishers are still welcome to place images above the ads. The only exception is if it's in such a way that it looks like the images are part of the ads.

When something like that comes to our attention, we'll ask that the publisher place a visible border between the ads and the images, to make it clear that the images are not being served by Google on behalf of the advertisers. We generally do not ask publishers to remove the images completely, we just ask that they add borders to avoid confusion.

So, the answer is that you probably do need a border of some type in order to be completely sure you are within the terms of service of AdSense. The final comments from the Jenstar blog...

Quote:
So to be fully complaint with the AdSense terms and policies while using the added images technique, you must have a border between the ads and the images, whether it be a bordered ad unit, or an on-page border you add yourself.

YPN seems to take a similar stance...

Quote:
Ad units must not be associated with images or media on the page

Also, users must be able to tell the difference between the Ad Unit and other content on the page.

Yeah, I got my two cents onto that page a while back.

Does this mean that the ad units have to be a different color then your template/layout? That you can’t use the same fonts as the ad unit? That you have to use a border of a different color then the background color of the ad unit.
That open up a bunch of “more details needed” type of questions over that rule.

I got the email a month ago about images next to ads. I sent them another site asking about borders and they seemed OK with it. So I have a triple border just to make sure!!

Yahoo has started a new feature. If they find something wrong (TOS) they wil email and also have it in your account. A link wil appear in your account to see the infraction and will give you an oppertunity to fix the TOS. You can submit from your account and it wil let you know if it paases.

Hi there, just to let everyone know also that YPN does not allow more than 3 ad units on a page. I've seen a few sites with more than 3 YPN ad units. If you have one, you should fix it.

Hope this will help prevent anyone on here from getting an email from YPN.

Well, they may send an email if you have too many ads on a page however they don't specify what is "too many".
I think 3 is a reasonable amount and even 4 however I also think it depends on the site. If you have a ton of content and the ads are being spammed then the odds are good that you won't have any issues but if you are spamming ads all over the place you will probably be asked to remove some amount of ad units.

Unless something has changed recently this is the way it has been for a while.

Actually, YPN does specifically state this. This may be new and I don't think many people are aware of it. I know that Adsense has this limit, and YPN may not have had it before.

But, now they specifically state that "The Ad page may contain a maximum of three ad units," on their program policy's page.

So if anyone has more than that, then they may be able to get away with it for a while, but sooner or later, they'll be hearing from YPN.
