Question I want to run a Contest, What's a Cool Prize?

Hi,

I'm hoping I can get some advice.
I want to run a contest in our new v3arcade for a piticular game.

I was thinking to run it for a week. Is that to short? Should it be closer to a month?

I was thinking of making the contest for highest score on a more retro game like asteroids, tetris, conundrum, etc.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a game?

What about a prize? I could budget up to an ipod shuffle price range or should I try something a little different?
What's a cool prize?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Sean,

I a giving away ipod shuffles. I can buy them for $70 and will be giving away maybe 4 this month.
I think it is a good prize because people love ipods and they are cheap to ship. Also relatively inexpensive.

So you're running one week long contests?

Do you think that coulde be a little too short for a contest?

I've been doing monthly cash contests. I usually announce it mid-month, so people aren't bored of it by the end of the month. It works pretty well, unless I take too long to post the contest, then the members start hounding me for it...

What are your users doing to win the contest?
Is it the same kind of thing with a high score or something else?

Do you mind posting a bit more info?

Thanks,
Sean

Yeah, I pick a game of the month, and award prizes based on which members score the highest on that game. The number of prizes and amounts vary depending on my mood. Since cheating is possible, I have to watch carefully and limit prizes to established members.

I am awarding the prize based on a point system. It is not cheat proof but it is the easiest way to ahve the contest and I can somewhat tell if someone is cheating the system.

Basically, we award 2 points per game play. For every 50 points a member has accumulated they receive one entry into the ipod drawing with a maximum of 50 entries (2500 points) per member.

I am also awarding weekly prizes. For instance this Sunday I am giving away an ipod shuffle based on the points system I just mentioned. Since the same member always has the best shot at the prize I have stipulated that the winner of a weekly contest is not eligible to win antoher weekly contest however is still eligible for the monthly prize. This evens the playing field a bit in case one member has 2500 points and 50 entries and the next closest has 500 points and 10 entries (which I doubt we will ever run into this problem).

The other thing which is important to this is having a forum so people can see when the contests are etc. I am just finishing up our forum integrated with phpas v3.0 This will make it easy to communicate with the gamers in general.

Hope that helps a bit.

I've just started trying this on my arcade...basically the same as ArcadeJunky with awarding the high scorers (1st and 2nd place) on a monthly selected game. Of course I'm not giving out quite as much money as ArcadeJunky though. :P

I'm using Amazon.com gift certificates. Guess we'll see how this works as the deadline is Monday 12 am.
