Default Newb Webmaster Here to Learn!

Hey folks,

The name's Andy and I'm from 'up north' in the UK. I just graduated from high school and I'm about to take a gap year.

Over the next 12 months I'll be working towards one goal: building an arcade that brings in enough cash to pay for my time in university.

I'm starting rock bottom since I've never owned an arcade before. I just purchased the phpas script and I'm taking it from there.

I hope to learn from you guys. The first thing I need to figure out is how traffic exchanges work.

Does anyone know of any decent tutorials about traffic exchanges?

Thanks and see you all around.

Thanks for the pm gamer99.

What would people recommend as 'reputable' traffic exchange sites? Is it just a case of trial and error or are there some basic sites that any new arcade webmaster should know about?

Hi,

Not to be a wet rag but there are much more lucrative things you could be putting your time into over the next 12 months.
I highly doubt you're going to suceed in paying for university with this idea.

How much is university over there anyways?

Welcome to T.A.! Honestly if you put in some serious work, and you have nothing else to do all day. Id bet you could pay for your college with your income after 1 year. Don't limit yourself to the arcade niche though.

Ok thanks for the realistic opinions guys. That makes me reconsider the whole idea...

mmm I'm not sure what to do. I guess I'll have to go away and think about it in more detail. I guess it's also good to have a reality check fairly early on so that when I get to 9 months down the line and I'm still earning £2 a day, I won't be too surprised.

@messa I take it then that you don't earn a living off your arcades. If that is the case, do you mind if I ask why you do it?

@GotSkillz what other niches would you recommend?

Should I just get a day job at Sainsburys and then get a huge loan for uni?

My parents can't afford to pay for me so it's basically my way or the highway...otherwise I wouldve sponged of mum and dad like most of my mates...

First thing's first...
How much do you need for each year and how many years?
What are your interests and what are you going to school for?
Do you have any start up money?

Unfortunetly I think that has a very good chance of happening.

Most webmasters work in multiple niches. If I were to pick one to pour myself into for a year it would not be the arcade/gaming niche.

You're a tough cookie messa but I like that, why beat around the bush...

Ok so I'm going to need minimum $50 per day or around £25 per day to make it viable. I'm going to be doing a degree in media and communications. I'm very interested in gaming and social media and particularly interstested in the kongregate model of online arcades. Obviously I don't have the capital for something like kongregate.

I'm starting out with a budget of $200. I've already spent $80 on phpas + a template. That doesn't leave me with much and I need some mod work done on the template too.

i've noticed that a couple of forum members are making it big time. One is bootyarcade. My feeling is that if booty can do it I can do it too. But maybe that's just wishful thinking, maybe booty just got luck.

Booty did make it fairly big. It wasn't luck, he did something few people were doing at the time. You can figure it out if you read through back posts on here. And that is what you will have to do to succeed in this niche. If you have something new to offer people will come running to get it.

It's easy to have a dime-a-dozen arcade like you will find on here most of the time. Poeple think this is easy. You buy a script, a template and a game pack, get some back links and your all set. The reality is just like anything else you get from it what you put in it. So you have to make good decisions about where to invest your time and money.

My latest site surpassed my 7 month old arcade in 10 days in both page views and revenue because I used what I had learned when I built the new site. The learning never stops. Still I do not do this for my income and if I did I would be very poor.

I started in arcades because it is truly a hard niche, the competition is outrageously hard because there are so many sites. I am using my knowledge gained from this niche in my other business. Arcades are great, a lot of fun, and a whole lot of low paying traffic. I will say this and you probably already know it. Traffic is the key in any web venture, and especially targeted traffic.

Good luck in your endeavors in the arcade niche. It is rewarding in many ways, and worth the experience.
