Hi
I have built a couple of WordPress arcade sites: Zap Gamez & Loopy Pursuits.
I also found wordpress to be slow at first, but then I discovered the WP Super Cache plugin, which speeds it up a lot!
I have also developed a wordpress plugin WP Games Embed (very much a beta at the moment) which allows you to embed games in a wordpress blog with various different options. The plugin is free so feel free to test it out...

WordPress is great for any kind of site because it has great SEO and so many plugins available.
