That's a great question.

First of all, blending ads (link color, background color, etc.) with your site is perfectly okay with Google, it's something they even recommend...

Quote:
Let's briefly define the three techniques you can use to design color palettes that will be successful for your site:
  • To blend, make the background and borders of your ads the same color as the background of your page where the ad is placed. If your site has a white background and you don't want to spend a lot of time choosing ad colors, we recommend using our pre-designed Open Air palette.
  • To complement, use colors that already exist on your site, but don't match the background and borders exactly where the ads are placed.
  • To contrast, choose colors that stand out against the background of your site. Contrasting is recommended only for sites with dark background, so we suggest using a palette with white background, white borders, and blue titles.

But, the real question is about the images next to ads. And here is the answer from Google...

Quote:
Publishers are still welcome to place images above the ads. The only exception is if it's in such a way that it looks like the images are part of the ads.

When something like that comes to our attention, we'll ask that the publisher place a visible border between the ads and the images, to make it clear that the images are not being served by Google on behalf of the advertisers. We generally do not ask publishers to remove the images completely, we just ask that they add borders to avoid confusion.

So, the answer is that you probably do need a border of some type in order to be completely sure you are within the terms of service of AdSense. The final comments from the Jenstar blog...

Quote:
So to be fully complaint with the AdSense terms and policies while using the added images technique, you must have a border between the ads and the images, whether it be a bordered ad unit, or an on-page border you add yourself.

YPN seems to take a similar stance...

Quote:
Ad units must not be associated with images or media on the page

Also, users must be able to tell the difference between the Ad Unit and other content on the page.
