I think you're right about choosing a domain that can be brandable and I too have heard that many schools block any domain with game etc in it.
I can't really explain what makes certain domains catchy or brandable. In my opinion out of all the sites I've owned, flashrehab.com is the best idea for a domain that I've ever typed into the godaddy search. Something about the name just seems really good to me as if it were a name that people will remember to visit again. The term "rehab" is used a lot in the news maybe?
I think brandable names might be a better idea than a variation of common terms if the words in the brandable name is good enough. Other examples of existing arcade sites with that type of domain would be gubug.com craverz.com newgrounds.com Those domains seem more brandable than generic flashgames.com. Someone that visits a site like flashgames.com could just as well be visiting another game domain as far as they're concerned. Nothing memorable about the title.
